The Arts

The Enid Symphony Orchestra, Douglas Newell, Music Director, is a semi-professional orchestra comprised of musicians from within a 120-mile radius.  The ESO performs an annual subscription concert series, Christmas at Pops and July 4th concert.  The ESO features classical and popular guest artists of regional, national and international stature.  Performances are given in the newly restored Enid Symphony Center located at 301 W. Broadway.  The center includes the Symphony Hall, the Jane Champlin Art Gallery, the Eleanor Hornbaker Banquet Hall, and the Theater Ballroom.  For ticket or facility rental information please contact Nancy Huey 580-237-9646.

The Gaslight Theatre presents entertaining stage productions regularly in the refurbished old Criterion movie theater just a block north of the downtown square. Enid's Community Theatre has an active season of 5 main shows, a summer musical, and a teen production at 221 N. Independence. It also features a spring comedy dinner theatre presented off-site as well as a free Shakespeare in the Park each June in historic Government Springs Park. The NOC Enid Community Band has two ensembles, a jazz band and a concert band. They meet on the campus of NOC - Enid in the Art Building. They are directed by Dr. Michael Moore & assisted by Dr. Joe Bryant. All interested musicians can apply. Call Northern Oklahoma College at 580-242-6300.

Attractions

The Museum of the Cherokee Strip, 507 S. 4th, and the Humphrey Heritage Village stand side by side on the west side of Enid’s historic Government Springs Park. Historical artifacts cover the history of the Cherokee Strip Land Run and Oklahoma events from 1540 to present.  Admission is free. 

The Humphrey Heritage Village includes the “Glidewell Home,” an elaborate Victorian style home that has been refurbished.  The original land office where pioneers lined up to file their claims after the great land run of 1893 are on the premises as well as Enid’s oldest church and an original one-room schoolhouse.  Open Tuesday through Saturday.  Please call ahead for hours.  580-237-1907.

The Midgley Museum, located at 1001 Sequoyah, displays an eclectic assortment of objects and artifacts collected over a lifetime of rock collecting by Mr. and Mrs. Dan Midgley.  Gem and mineral enthusiasts will enjoy the array and the gift shop.  It is operated by the Northwest Oklahoma Masonic Lodges.   Open Wednesday through Friday from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. or by appointment.  Free admission.  580-234-7265.

Veterans Museum. The Enid Woodring Wall of Honor & Veterans Park was dedicated in 2000 and is located at the Enid Woodring Regional Airport. The Wall is in honor of the men & women of the armed forces of the United States. For further information, contact Elaine Johns at 580-233-4530.

Come play and learn with us at Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse!  The Discovery Warehouse is an old red brick grocery warehouse that has been converted into a hands-on art and science museum for the whole family. Call to find out about weekly classes and special events.  We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 pm until 5:00 p.m.  Leonardo's is closed on Mondays. Our outdoor area--Adventure Quest--is the world’s largest community-built playgrounds/science parks.  Adventure Quest is an outdoor science and learning center/giant playground across the street from The Discovery Warehouse. Starting after Memorial Day, Adventure Quest is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m. for "Twilight Time".  Adventure Quest is closed if the temperature is under 40º F or if it is raining or snowing.    Admission is $6.00 per person for both the Discovery Warehouse and Adventure Quest.  Children under 2 years old are free.  Located at 200 E.  Maple.   580-233-ARTS(2787).  www.leonardos.org

If trains fascinate you, you will enjoy the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma located at 702 N. Washington.  Within the museum compound, there are eight cabooses from railroads that have served Enid, a baggage car, motor cars, a three-dome tank car, a 50-ton engine, a Champlin tank car, a Frisco 1519 Steam Engine, a Frisco boxcar and hopper car.  New additions to the museum include an Amtrak lounge car, two flat cars and three other boxcars.  The model railroad room includes HO-gauge, N-gauge, and Lionel layouts.  Over 900 pieces of railroad dining car china plus an array of railroad memorabilia is also on display.  Open Tuesday through Friday from 1 until 4:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. The Southern Heights Heritage Center and Museum, located 616 Leona Mitchell Blvd., provides life-learning opportunities in appreciation of African Americans, their ancestry, heritage and history. Exhibits include a journey from Africa to the Americas, Booker T. Washington and Carver School experience, The Leona Mitchell Collection, the Children's Learning and Resource Center and a Reading and Media Center. Indian Creek Village Winery is located 3 miles west of junction 58 near Ringwood on Hwy. 412, then 1/2 mile north. Visitors can tour the winery, sample the wines, purchase a gift basket, hand-crated items, Made in Oklahoma products or wine accessories in the gift shop. Recreation

David Allen Memorial Ballpark is located in downtown Enid at 301 S. Grand. The ballpark is used for high school, college and American Legion baseball; state, regional and national baseball tournaments; outdoor concerts and special events. The Enid Motor Speedway, located at the Garfield County Fairgrounds, conducts car races every Saturday night 7:00 p.m., March through October.  580-233-9755.

Fitness and Exercise

The Denny Price Family YMCA of Enid features Northwest Oklahoma’s most complete fitness facility.  This 63,000 square foot facility includes two full sized gymnasiums, two complete Cybex and cardio vascular centers, indoor running track, free weight room and two racquetball courts.  New additions to the facility include a family adventure center with climbing wall, spacious locker rooms and an indoor swimming pool complex with a lap/exercise pool and family recreation pool. Golf

Meadowlake Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole course just east of the intersection of Rupe and Cleveland. Green fees are $14 on weekdays and $17 on weekends. Call for tee times.  580-234-3080.

Oakwood Country Club is a private, 18-hole course that has hosted regional amateur and PGA events. Located at 1601 N. Oakwood. 580-242-5408.

Pheasant Run Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72, championship, link-style course with water in play on twelve holes and four sets of tees for players of every ability level.  Green fees are $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends and holidays. A bag of balls at the driving range is $1.50.  Cart rental is $10 per person and Mulligan’s Bar & Grill offers full food and beverage service.  Located at 1702 Clubhouse Drive just west of Garland Road.  580-233-2355.

Northern Hills Golf Course at 303 S. Montgomery, is a 9-hole hilly layout.  Open at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends. Green fees are $8 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and holidays. 580-234-5131.

Golden Oaks Golf Course is a par-3 pitch and putt course located at 5801 N. Oakwood. Open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to dark and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to dark.  Green fees are $5 for nine holes and $2.00 for an additional 9 holes. A large bucket of driving range balls is $3.00 and a small bucket is $1.50.  580-233-2762.

Turkey Creek Golf Club is a par 70, 18-hole course located 5 miles west of Hennessey on Highway 51. Green fees are $10 Monday through Friday before 10 a.m., $15 after 10 a.m. and $20 on weekends.  The fee is includes a cart.  For more information call 405-853-2100.
